Hiring a Senior-Level Marketing Professional, Part Three

How to Hire a “Big Picture” Marketer Who Can Help You Understand Your Industry and Forge Strategic Partnerships

As I have written over the last few weeks, there are a number of valid reasons to hire a senior-level marketing professional for your business. Today, let’s explore the third of those reasons . . .

You Need Someone to Help You Understand Your Industry, Stay on Top of All Marketing Trends, Make Connections for You, and Build Strategic Partnerships

If you are screening candidates for this level of deep industry experience, it is relatively easy to evaluate their strengths by asking some pointed questions and checking references. Here are some questions to ask:

  • Ask candidates to describe the most important current trends in your industry.
  • Ask them to explain who the most important companies are in your industry, and why. What are they doing that sets them apart?
  • Ask them to define and describe the most important technologies that they believe will connect you to customers.
  • Ask them to describe projects they have run for other companies and the specific results they achieved. Then call those companies to get confirmation of what the candidates told you.

If you are looking outside your industry for a great marketer, you might have to dig a bit deeper.  Some marketing professional are always thinking about networking and looking for new opportunities for their companies. Those people are also attending or presenting at conferences, reading or creating industry news. You want those people.
